“Fortunately, the shoot ended without a lot of injuries,” the stunt coordinator reveals Park Young-ill through the Netflix blockbuster “Squid Game” relatively unscathed. “The actors were very active in participating in all the action scenes,” he explained for our recent webchat, adding that they “had to be mixed together to play all these games and the actors wore themselves- same the wires and were part of the action scenes themselves so they were very active and they also enjoyed the experience. “Squid Game” was designed by the showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk, who not only created and produced “Squid Game,” but also wrote and directed all nine episodes, expanding the story from its original feature film format. The stars of the series Lee Jung-jae as the central hero Gi-hun, Jung Ho Yeon as destitute North Korean refugee Sae-byeok, Hae-soo Park like the Sang-woo calculator, Wi Ha-jun as undercover cop Jun-ho, Heo Sung-tae as villainous Deok-su, recent Golden Globe winner O Young-su like the old man Il-nam, Lee Yoomi like the stoic Ji-yeong, Anupam Tripathi as childish migrant Ali and Kim Joo-ryoung like deliciously unbalanced Mi-nyeo. The series centers on the story of unlucky people in dire need of money, who each receive mysterious invitations to join a life-or-death dangerous version of their childhood games in order to win a cash prize of 45.6 billion. won (equivalent to approximately US$38 million).

Each game is a traditional Korean children’s game, such as Red Light Green Light, but in this sinister “amusement park“, the consequence of losing each game is a painful death. Who will be the winner and what is the purpose of this game? Of the 456 participants from all walks of life who are locked in a secret location to play Game 1, only a handful remain to play Game 6. Netflix premiered all nine episodes of the dystopian South Korean thriller on September 17 from the last year, after which became a word-of-mouth sensation and launched the streaming giant’s most popular series, topping the Netflix charts in more than 80 countries.

After all its commercial success, “Squid Game” could dominate at the Emmys this year, following its three surprise wins at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards, where Lee won Best Dramatic Actor, Jung won Best Dramatic Actress and Park proudly shared in the stunt ensemble award. “I’m extremely happy and I didn’t expect that at all,” he admits. “Overseas audiences and Korean audiences have actually sent our show a lot of love, and I’m grateful for that,” he said humbly, adding, “I will continue to work very hard at my job.”
