April 9 marked the grand opening of the Rhimes Performing Arts Center (RPAC) by the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (DADA).

The new Los Angeles building is a two-story, 24,000 square foot complex adjacent to Koreatown. The structure includes five dance studios, including one equipped for aerial training, a 200-seat performance space, as well as classrooms designed by global architecture, design and planning firm, Gensler.

Gensler has partnered with DADA to design a premier arts venue that supports their commitment to expanding the reach of dance and theater arts to enrich the lives of young dancers in the Greater Los Angeles area.

The evening featured performances by Tony, Grammy, Emmy and NAACP award winner Billy Porter (Naughty boots,Laid), world-renowned American mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, Tiler Peck (New York Ballet), women’s tap sensations Syncopated Ladies by Chloe Arnold and DADA Ensemble.

Other public officials, such as Los Angeles City Councilman Herb Wesson, Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Los Angeles mayoral candidate Karen Bass, were also on hand to support Allen and Rhimes’ partnership.

“This (PRPP) is a community anchor,” Waters said at the event, “and it’s a place kids can expect to go. A lot of schools don’t have art, they don’t have music, they don’t have dance. It will now be a place where they can hope to develop their talents.

“Some of our kids have impeccable talents and all they need is a ship to get that rocket off the ground,” Council Member Wesson said. “Having people like Debbie [in this community] that are genuine, reward our children with skills and knowledge…puts them on a launching pad right here.

DADA will host opportunities throughout the summer where dancers can join their programs and possibly visit the Rhimes Performing Arts Center. To follow the news of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy:
