TV show cancellations are devastating enough on their own. But when a series has already been renewed, then gets fired bluntly? It’s levels of heartache.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, the occasional TV show had its renewal for a subsequent season reversed, as has happened with series like HBO’s. Vinyl or ABC Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. But as COVID has upended the TV industry in 2020 and beyond — affecting production schedules and budgets, among other factors — it’s now, frustratingly, not uncommon for shows that have already been picked up for additional seasons to be canceled later. (The ever-changing landscape of new streaming services and corporate mergers also had an impact.)
The Paramount+ Anthology Series why women kill is the latest to have its fate changed: the comedy-drama was canceled on July 1, seven months after the announcement of the renewal of season 3. In recent years, however, “non-renewals” have also ripped Netflix GLOW (sniff!), Comedy Central drunk story and ABC Stumptown of our television schedules, to name a few.
